Wynwood’s History

The Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, Florida, has a long and rich history. It began as a quiet residential neighborhood in the early 1900s. However, it slowly evolved into an area known for its diverse arts and culture. It took decades for Wynwood to become the vibrant hub of creativity it is today.
Nonetheless, in 2009, the area was reborn when real estate developer and art enthusiast Tony Goldman bought up several buildings and warehouses. He intended to transform Wynwood into an outdoor gallery. Goldman Properties affiliate 2425 Ltd. owns a total 22,838-square-foot property, which currently has two industrial buildings that combine for 10,470 square feet.

This diverse neighborhood’s 50 city blocks are covered with vibrant murals painted by world-renowned artists and innovators. Wynwood has more street murals than any other city in the world, and, compared to other locations where street art is banned, it is encouraged.

As Goldman famously said,

“I saw this amazing canvas filled with energy and decided to make it my mission to bring the world’s greatest street art here.”

And that’s what he did.
Today, Wynwood is a mecca for photography, art, and culture enthusiasts from around the world. With its unique collection of murals, sculptures, and other installations, it is one of the most popular destinations in Miami. From vibrant alleyways and creative galleries to colorful street festivals, Wynwood has something to offer everyone.

While it is a neighborhood that is rooted in humble beginnings and evolved into a melting pot community, it is a neighborhood on the rise.

The Importance of the Wynwood Walls

The Wynwood Walls have played a major role in the history and development of Wynwood, Miami’s arts and culture district. As we mentioned above, these Walls were founded by the late Tony Goldman in 2009.  His vision was to create an outdoor art gallery filled with the work of some of the world’s most renowned street artists. Indeed, over the past decade, these walls have become a landmark for artists, photographers, and urban culture enthusiasts.
Another interesting tidbit about the Wynwood Walls is that it was formerly known as “El Barrio,” a traditionally Puerto Rican area of Miami. Now, the walls have become coated in bright murals by some of the world’s most famous street artists.

In fact, in 2012, the Wynwood Walls hosted an event called “Wynwood Life”—a celebration of culture, photography, art, food, and fashion from around the world. This event has since become an annual tradition and is attended by locals and tourists alike.

One of the most famous quotes associated with the Walls is by Tony Goldman himself:

“The Wynwood Walls have been created to bring to Miami what I believe to be the most important art movement of our times: street art.”

“With this community-based public art project, we hope to bring attention to this remarkable movement and create a haven for appreciators of street art and graffiti from around the world.”

Furthermore, the Wynwood Walls are a symbol of Miami’s vibrant culture, an urban art hub, and an inspiring reminder that creativity and expression should always be celebrated.
